Meaning of Osmosis

what is Osmosis:

Osmosis is the movement, the step or the flow of water, liquid or gas (solvent in a solution) between different types of concentration of substances that can be dissolved.

Osmosis is a process related to physics and chemistry, and is also essential for the survival of the cells, in cell metabolism of living beings, is related to the discipline of biology.

When the water or solvent moves, does it in order to have the same concentration in all media through a small membrane with pores that allow the passage of water or solvent molecules. This type of transport is called active transport, where the cell has an expenditure of energy, and when you don’t spend it, transport it is called passive.

During osmosis, solvent or substance to be dissolved tends to cross the semipermeable membrane, it has pores of dimension molecular not letting molecules of the solute but solvent, solution with lower concentration, in a way that this solution increases the amount of that item and the other decreases to equalize. This effect continues until the hydrostatic pressure balances this trend.

Also, the effect of osmosis is used in the processes of Exchange in the nutrition of plant and animal cells. In the case of plant cells, osmosis involves a combination of diffusion through the bilayer of the membrane and the flow of mass through the pores of the membrane, these pores are formed by aquaporinas that are selective channels water.

Furthermore, with respect to the animal cell osmosis is the phenomenon in which occurs the water transport across the plasma membrane with the reinforcement of the bilayer of phospholipids.

There are diseases that are associated with problems in the osmosis of the cell that shows symptoms such as:

Dehydration, loss of water and mineral salts of a body.  Transport of oxygen deficiency. Polyuria, manifestation of a higher than expected urine output. Polydipsia, abnormal increase in thirst.

The term osmosis is also used colloquially, in particular with regard to the studies and the way of acquiring knowledge. The students, when they don’t know any matter, say that they would like to learn by osmosis, i.e., without spending too much energy and not even having to study.

Also speaks of osmosis between two items or individuals when they have an influence reciprocal or mutual, for example, two people who are well understood.

Etymologically, osmosis or osmosis comes from the Greek “osmosis”, formed by two words, “osmos”, which means “push”, and the suffix “-sis”, which means “action”.

Reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the opposite process, where the substance (solute) is separated from the solvent through a process, applying one surface pressure greater than the osmotic pressure, waterproof membranes that do not allow water to pass, opposed to the normal flow of osmosis.

Are some examples where this technique is used, to remove alcohol from the beer, to concentrate the whey, for example, of the cheese, and many other industrial processes.

Osmosis and diffusion

Osmosis and diffusion are two types of passive transport, which occurs between two solutions and which aims to match the concentrations of these solutions.

Diffusion is the transport of solutes through membranes, the more concentrated (hypotonic) means less concentrated (hypertonic) environment. Osmosis is the passage of the substance to be dissolved in the middle of higher concentration to lower concentration medium.

Osmotic pressure

The osmotic pressure is external pressure exerted on the solution with the highest concentration of solutes, preventing its dilution. A simpler way, the osmotic pressure is a force that is applied to prevent the process of osmosis.
