Meaning of Oxygen

what is oxygen:

Oxygen is a chemical element gaseous, colourless, odourless and tasteless, plentiful in the Earth’s crust, in the atmosphere and the oceans, which is essential for life. The word is composed of the Greek words ὀξύς (oxys), which means ‘acid’, and γένος (genos), ‘source’, ‘lineage’, ‘clan’. Formerly, it was believed that oxygen was necessary to produce acid, hence its name, which literally means: “that produces acid”.

In the periodic table, is represented with the symbol or part of the Vla, of the family of the anfigenos or chalcogen group. Its atomic number is 8 and its atomic mass, 16.

As gas is heavier than air, and constitutes one-fifth of this in its molecular form O2. It also is part of water, oxides, almost all acids and organic substances, and is present in our body and all living beings. It is essential for the respiration of animals and plants (photosynthesis), and in the generation of the carbon dioxide (CO2). It is very reactive, and active combustion processes. Meeting in a composition of three atoms (O3) is known as ozone, the gas that constitutes the Ozonosphere, vital to protect us from ultraviolet radiation of the Sun atmospheric layer.

Also uses the expression “giving oxygen” to refer to the need to give life or invigorate a situation. Also, the expression “oxygen ball” is used in a sense equivalent: “point rescued as a visitor is an oxygen balloon for equipment”.

Uses of oxygen

Oxygen is widely used by humans: industrially is used for the production of steel, welding and cutting of materials of iron; to obtain a wide variety of substances, important in the manufacture of textiles and plastics; for the purification of waste water and the manufacture of explosives. In its liquid state, is used as fuel in rockets, as well as for the generation of artificial air in aircraft, submarines, spacecraft and diving.

Oxygen therapy

In medicine, oxygen is used in way medicinal for oxygen therapy, which consists of providing the patient, through ventilation, oxygen concentrations greater than usual for the treatment of respiratory diseases, Burns, or hypoxia, as well as resuscitation, anaesthesia or therapy hyperbaric.

Dissolved oxygen

Dissolved oxygen known as the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. It is essential for the respiration of aquatic plant and animal species, in addition, their measurement is used to determine the levels of contamination of waters and, therefore, the conditions of life underwater.

Oxygen is dissolved in water through processes of oxygenation as photosynthesis in aquatic plants, or derivatives of the movement of the waters, as the flow of a river between rocks or the waves produced by the wind. The factors influencing the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water is atmospheric pressure, levels of salinity in the water, temperature, current flow and presence of aquatic plants, organic matter in decomposition and human activity.
